Grounded in more than 30 years of social justice work and mindful practices, Mindful Justice resources social justice organizations, community activists, change agents and people committed to a healed, thriving world. Meditation and mindful practices are woven throughout all programs to deepen the individual and as tools necessary to create a healed, equitable and thriving community.

Mindful Justice honors the work of Cheri Maples. An ordained dharma teacher by Thich Nhat Hahn, Cheri served as a police officer and then prosecutor in Madison, Wisconsin. A peace activist, she joined the Order of Interbeing in 2002 and was ordained as a dharma teacher by Thích Nhất Hạnh in 2008. Cheri founded the Center for Mindfulness and Justice. Mindful Justice’s name is an homage to Cheri’s work, mentoring and friendship.
Cheri taught and led meditation retreats for criminal legal system professionals nationally. Cheri died in 2017 from complications a year after a motorcycle accident.
Working with at-risk communities can take a toll. Understanding the impact of the work, often called second-hand trauma or compassion fatigue, is critical to the effectiveness and longevity for service providers.
Warrior Wellness Trainings provide insight into the impact of second-hand trauma and ways to integrate healthy life practices into your day-to-day living. Looking first to the individual, Warrior Wellness includes work with organizations to bring about wellness practices to the organizational structure and culture so as to ensure staff are supported.
Space created for white-identified people to learn, engage and activate around racial healing, Allies and Co-Conspirators workshops explore the history of race, racist systems, and the role white privilege played and continues to play in sustaining those system. White-identified people learn the role racism plays in America and ways they as individuals and in community can bring into action the responsibility undo racism. Through their work, they become informed allies and co-conspirators in undoing racism.
Multi-racial gatherings that build integrated learning experiences toward deeper racial healing. Brave Beyond Boundaries enables brave conversations around racism, healing, and strategies for individuals and organizations to intentionally incorporate racial healing strategies in their daily lives. Brave Beyond Boundaries means one’s commitment to be brave beyond the confines of the gathering. Taking learnings, allowing continued growth and engagement to carry forward from the sessions.We offer a variety of programs aimed at addressing the needs of our community, including education, healthcare, and social services. With more than three decades of working as a criminal legal system and on issues underlying of structural racism, Caroline Durham understands the causes and solutions to effects of second-hand trauma. Since 2005, she has led wellness trainings for public defender offices, bar associations and community social justice organizations. Having studied mindfulness and wellness practices for fifteen years, Caroline developed a comprehensive, thoughtful approach to understanding and resolving the impact of compassion fatigue.
Caroline’s first silent meditation retreat was led by Cheri and designed for social justice activists. From that meeting, their mentor relationship began and blossomed into a deep friendship. Through the works of Mindful Justice, Caroline carries forward the commitment to healing, peace and mindfulness that was the core of Cheri’s teachings.
